About Armenia

THE SECRET TO HAVING A REWARDING VACATION

Hint: you can hardly think of any delightful activity that you cannot do in Armenia.

In Armenia, we treat our county as our home and we call it home. This is exactly why we treat visitors as our guests. You can sense this when dealing with literally anyone in Armenia – with a B&B or restaurant owner, with people on the street and in villages – you can feel how welcome each visitor is.

This unique attitude makes any vacation in Armenia enjoyable no matter what type of activity you engage in. Nonetheless, there are myriads of things you can do.

Here, we have summarized only a few types to address different preferences and tastes. And we have brought only a few examples of each type. Listing everything you can do in Armenia during your vacation would require volumes.

WHAT CAN YOU EXPECT TO GET
IN ARMENIA FOR YOUR VACATION?

To fans of outdoor activities, we offer over 30 different types of things to do in Armenia.

“TATEV WINGS” ROPEWAY

An absolute must-see, Tatever ropeway will leave you speechless. There is a reason why it is in the Guinness Book of World records (longest tram in the world). Built in a short 11-months’ time, the ropeway is 5.7 kilometers long. It passes through a 360 meter gorge of Vorotan River and over hills covered with lush forests. One of the two terminals is on the hill overlooking the village of Halidzor and the other is near Tatev Monastery, on the road to Tatev village. Two cabins operate simultaneously, traveling in opposite directions.

BALLOON RIDE

This 4-5 hour program includes preparation of the balloon, 1-hour flight at 1,000 meters height, and a unique ceremony of handing over an aviation diploma after the flight. The acceptable temperature for the flight varies from -20 to + 40. Most suitable seasons – all seasons; most suitable timing – 1-2 hours after the sunrise and 2-3 hours before the sunset. You will get a bonus too – view of Mount Ararat from a bird’s eye perspective.

PARAGLIDING

Tandem paragliding flights are a great way to enjoy the full paragliding aerial experience, without having first to learn how to launch and control the paraglider yourself. An expert paraglider pilot will take care of the launch, flight and landing for you. What you will get is a breathtaking experience of flying like a bird over the beautiful Armenian landscapes.

YELL EXTREME PARK

The only zip-line in the region is in the Northern part of Armenia that is also known for its lush and scenic landscapes; you will be zip-lining over an incredible natural gorge. There are five different lines: 135m, 268m, 200m, 375m, and 750m. The height is approximately 200-300m above the ground. The average duration of the trip is 1.5h: 15min for special safety rules training, from 30 sec to 1.5 min for each ZipLine depending on people’s weight and 2-7 min walking after each flight to get from one line to another.

MORE ADVENTUROUS OPTIONS

Hiking, jeep-touring, cycling and horse-riding trails.

Most of the hiking trails will lead you to a landmark, a natural wonder or a small hospitable village where you can taste local food and wines and become familiar with Armenian traditions and customs.

Mount-cycling and jeep touring are organized both summer and wintertime. Several horseriding farms not only organize horse rides but also provide educational programs for kids.

A MARVELOUS ALTERNATIVE TO ADVENTURES

Cultural and historic sites, landmarks and monuments.  Thousands of years of our history imprinted on these sites.

LAKE SEVAN

A landmark Armenians are very proud of. It is one of the largest freshwater high altitude reservoirs in the world. The beauty of this lake is that it changes its color and shades as the weather changes, several times a day. In summer, the water becomes suitable for swimming. The natural landscape surrounding the lake coupled by the monastery on the top of the peninsula hill makes an exquisite
view.

GARNI TEMPLE

Iconic Pagan Temple of Garni — widely considered as the country’s most important symbol of pre-Christian Armenia, a classical sample of Hellenic architecture. The temple was dedicated to the heathen sun god, Mitra. Armenia’s King Trdat I built it in the 1st century. It became a summerhouse for Armenian royalty after the Christian conversion. The Avan Gorge, carved by the
Azat River lies below. Stone Symphony rock is another must-see here.

GEGHARD MONASTERY

Named after the holy lance that pierced Christ’s side at the crucifixion, this UNESCO World Heritage-listed monastery is carved out of the rock face of the Azat River Gorge. Legend has it as founded in the 4th century and its oldest surviving chapel dates back to the 12th century. Surp Astvatsatsin (Holy Mother of God) Church dates from 1215 and features wonderful carvings; its adjoining “gavit” (vestibule) with its nine arches was built between 1215 and 1225. The place has its very own powerful ambiance that leaves visitors speechless.

AMBERD FORTRESS CASTLE

Amberd is a 7th-century fortress located 2,300 meters above sea level, on the slopes of Mount Aragats. The name translates to “fortress in the clouds” in Armenian. The castle and some sections of walls are constructed of roughly hewn basalt blocks set in place with mortar. A bathhouse was built in the same period. A structure somewhat unusual for a military fortress. It has remained intact along with its water supply system.

THINGS TO DO IN THE EVENING

Finally, after a day of traveling, sightseeing, touring, and other things here is one of the travelers’ main delights – dining and nightlife. This section was most difficult to write. Why? Because there are so many places to go, it requires careful consideration to pick only a few.

We will not pick and present here the best restaurants or entertainment places. Instead, we will name several Yerevan area districts where there is the most concentration of excellent restaurants serving original menu and best wines: Yerevan Cascade, Tumanyan Street, Abovyan Street, Hanrapetutyan Street, Saryan Street, and  Northern Avenue.

To get the real flavor we recommend you check them out by yourself. The biggest challenge? To find a free table. The best ones are usually fully booked; you will need a prior reservation. And here are some statistical figures of interest: 61 restaurants in Yerevan serve Italian food; 50 serve Middle-
Eastern food. There are 12 sushi places, 6 Chinese restaurants, 18 pizza places, and 7 steakhouses. Undoubtedly, you will have what to choose from.
